  1. My favorite critical approach is Feminist Criticism because I believe that at the time period of the early 1900's, women were having a collective epiphany in that they began breaking out of the Victorian mold and realizing their potential as individuals with unique thoughts and emotions. This approach is also the most obvious one for The Awakening because the book focuses on the self-discovery and epiphany of the protagonist.

  2. The literary aproach i would feel most comfortable writing about would have to be feminism critisicm not only because i know no one else is going to want to do it but because this seems to be a major theme in the book. analyzing the partiarchal language used, also stereotypical themes reflected throughout the will be interesting to write about.

  3. We continued to discuss Ethan Frome, mostly the relationships between Ethan, Zeena, and Mattie. We’re trying to figure out each character’s developing motives, and the significance of the narrator; there isn’t a great deal of material to study from this story.

  4. After reading the definitions of the literary criticism techniques, I chose to write my essay based on the technique of psychoanalytic criticism. The reason that I choose this distinct way in capturing my interpretation of Ethan Frome, is because the novel is very simple, and I want to see if there is more of a psychological meaning behind these simplistic words and phrases.

  5. I think that Feminist Criticism is the most intriguing approach for this book. Kate Chopin provides many examples about the change in women's role in this era. Edna's character is displayed as a strong minded and independent person who is learning and understanding her submission to her husband, something that will change. As we read on, I hope to learn more about Kate Chopin's feminist criticism to the role of women. :)

  6. I would choose Feminist Criticism as the form of literary criticism for "The Awakening" because:
+ it shows how women characters are portrayed.. meaning the way they are viewed in society, in the household, among other women, etc.
+ the 1900s was an era of conformity and new beginnings for Americans, especially women who were just starting to gain rights and "break out of their shells" (corsets), literally, HAH!

  7. i am absolutely infatuated by the idea of Psychoanalytic criticism because unlike 'the new criticism' and ones like it, Psychoanalytic criticism focuses on the way the author creates the work and the way it appeals to the reader. finding the meaning behind the text. it also deals a lot with interpreting the authors work as their unintentional expression of their wants and desire through the writing.

  8. I find the Historicist criticism the most interesting. I enjoy discovering the historical context behind the literature and seeing how the time period affects the way the characters act and communicate with each other. As well as how society as a whole is affected by the history of the piece of literature.

  9. Jahmal B. Golden chose Feminist Criticism....

I choose this criticism because it really captures a huge part of this book. Women have been stunted by society through years of oppression. For starters, this author is a woman and shes definitely going against the norm by being an author instead of a mother or house wife. Also, one character in our book is considering sex and the love of married man. This isn't normal at all at the time. Not that it is too great now....But still, this book and this criticism is about a dramatic change in woman and their thinking. Its about empowering and going against the grain. : ) Let me know if i should write more.

  10. In reading My Antonia by Willa Cather our group was introduced to the simplicity of mid-western life. Cather through the eyes of Jim Burden contrasts the establishment of the eastern part of America to the slower underdeveloped west in Blackhawk, Nebraska. Jimmy seems to want to be independent at his young age and feels like he should be able to take care of himself; when it comes to living with his grandmother. On his journey to Nebraska he noticed a traveling Bohemian family who he later found out to be his closest neighbors. He grew a fascination with the oldest family of the Bohemian family. Thus begginging his relationship with Antonia Carefree social status is a big theme for Antonia, she socializes with other boys weakening the relationship betweem her and Jim in later chapters. So far I feel that Jimmy feels that he is basically living day by day. Jimmy is just beginning to know his grandparents and his new life ahead .

  11. I would prefer to use feminist criticism because of how drastically the relationships between men and women have changed since the time period in which the book was set. In the book, it was pretty socially acceptable for a woman like Edna to spent her time with a boy like Robert even though he was not her husband. It seems to me that men were much more confident in those times. I say confident because I feel that trust was not a very large factor in the situation. It was more confidence because even Edna said in the story that woman have no real reason to cheat on a Creole man. Now in our time, I think that men are even less trusting and less confident in their relationships.

  12. I chose to write my essay about feminist criticism, because the book is focused about the relationship between Ethan, Mattie and Zeena.

  13. GROUP DISCUSSION:
Today we talked about how we don't like working in groups and how the utilization of computers is at times annoying and confusing, yet it is much more efficient and indeed more commonly used. :/

ALSO... The feminist critique approach is our best bet for Chopin's book because of her patriarchal language throughout the novel, as well as stereotypes that were formed during the 1900s towards women. Though they were respected and (those) who were in upper-class social classes, many women were attempting to break free from the household, and were sometimes looked upon as "loose" and "too curious". Kate Chopin's character Edna is a prime example of a woman who is disregarding the mold women at that time carried. When she went to her male friends house to swim (learn to) it showed great rebellious characteristics and intrigued the readers because maybe she will continue to see this man, going against her husband- the patriarchal figure in this book.

  14. I suppose that, among the group, psychoanalytic criticism is the most interesting. (It sounds cool.) This type of criticism studies the subtext and other of stories that are still very important, but not always obvious. I am not sure if I would use this approach when reviewing Ethan Frome, however. I am not sure that Marxist criticism or feminist criticism would be adequate either (and aren't as interesting all on their own anyway).

  15. I would rather to write a essay with a feminist criticism approach. This is the study of women rights. I have not got far in my novel , My Antonia by Willa Cather , so im not sure if i would use this criticism in this reading.

  16. Today we spoke on the book as a whole. We looked at the literary approaches for the book. We established that the Zina was the most powerful person in the book and the lovers tried to kill themselves and it didnt work. Also, Ethan is really whimpy and weak in comparison to others in the book and in reality.
